Debre Berhan University takes security measures after disturbance

Conflicts and disturbances in Ethiopian universities keep reoccurring as a reflection of the country’s socio-political dynamics. Debre Berhan University, located in Northern Shewa of Amhara region, faced its share of challenges on June 3, 2019. According to several reports, attending students and campus security guards have been injured due to the conflict. Debre Berhan University Senate held an emergency meeting on Tuesday, June 4, 2019, to discuss measures to rectify the disturbance and assure the safety and security of the students and university staff members. In an interview with Mereja TV, the university’s Communication Director Ahmed Mohammed discuss the university’s stance on the situation and finalized decision passed to punish the 58 students have been found guilty of inciting and participating in the violence that left many injured. Until the peace is restored, classes have been suspended.
