Nearly one million civilians have been displaced from Oromia Western Guji zone and Southern Nations, Nationalities and People’ Regional State (SNNPR) Gedeo zone. The tragedy began eight months ago after ethnic clashes in the areas but only came to the world’s attention when The Guardian published a report. Many international organizations and Ethiopian people have criticized the government for its prior negligence of the situation and delayed response to the critical situation. Many youth groups have arrived at the camps to aid the displaced families alongside non-profit organizations. The most outstanding participation was seen from Yelagaa group. Yelagaa is a budding youth movement founded by Wolaita youths opposing the rule of Southern Ethiopian People’s Democratic Movement (SEPDM) in the state.
