Mereja TV Special: From dust we came

Ethnic segregation is believed to have been introduced by fascist Italians during the occupation. After their defeat, the concept was buried until 1991. The ideology was re-introduced when TPLF transitioned Ethiopian politics to a cosmetic democratic system. In order to undermine possible challenges, EPRDF segregated Ethiopia into nine regions and two regions based on language and partially geographical regionalization. The nationality division was recorded on individuals documentation which provides a strong base for discrimination of individuals during employment and public benefits.

This segregation and ethnic politics based on language have erased what it means to Ethiopian for this generation. Individuals and groups are using this tragedy and miswritten history as a source of income by creating massive radical followers. Their success can be seen by the rising ethnic clashes and internal displacement as a result. The clashes are inhumane since the followers are blinded by radical ideology.

In all this chaos, one should ask if these acts of violence are all there is to life or have we forgotten what it means to live. For country holding religious practices as pride, the recent chaos seems hypocrisy at its best. Mereja TV Special program takes us to where fate has already reserved our final destination to evaluate today’s Ethiopia in retrospective glasses.
