Radical Oromo-nationalists have been claiming ownership over Addis Ababa and this didn’t sit well with many. The fact that the federal government has appointed a deputy mayor from Oromo Democratic Party (ODP) with radical values concerning Addis Ababa raised even more controversy. The debate over Addis Ababa’s ownership keeps growing as the government hasn’t given any official response. The controversial claim has become the leading agenda for every self-proclaimed nationalist activist.
Amhara Democratic Party (ADP) took a firm stand on the issues of Addis Ababa. ADP executive member Migbaru Kebede said that a recent claim by some individuals and groups that Addis Ababa belongs to Oromia Region only is senseless and that Ethiopia’s capital belongs to all Ethiopians. Ato Endawoke Abite, Trade and Industry Office head, supported ADP’s stand by affirming that Addis Ababa has its own structure and administration, and it is the capital of not only Ethiopia but also Africa.
