Those who do a lot of push-ups will be less ill, according to recent research that was published in the Journal of American Medical Association (JAMA).

The research subjects who do more than 40 pushups non-stop had a significantly lower risk of becoming seriously ill over the next decade than those who made fewer than ten.

For the study, the research team has examined more than 1,100 active firefighters aged 21 to 66 years. They had to do as many push-ups as possible in addition to medical exams and blood tests. Afterward, the firefighters were checked annually for over ten years. There were 37 heart diseases over that time, but only in one case for a person who made 40 non-stop push-ups.

The relationship between performance and heart disease persisted even when factors such as age and weight have been excluded. Therefore, the research team considers push-ups an easy and cheap way to test their health.
