No Amnesty for former Ethiopian officials stuck in Italian embassy for over 20 years


Two former Ethiopians officials, who have been stuck in the Italian Embassy in Addis Ababa for years, would have to remain there for now.

Derg officials Berhanu Bayeh and Addis Tedla ran into the Italian embassy for protection some 28 years ago when the Mengistu Hailemariam regime was toppled. There was hope that they may finally be released after Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed took office. However, things have remained the same.

Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed had talked about the probability of extending forgiveness to the Addis and Berhanu during a speech at the Millennium Hall in May 2018.

However, the former Chief of Staff of the Prime Minister has said the government does not forgive people responsible for crimes against humanity.

“As far as I know, there is no plan on the part of the government to grant amnesty to persons responsible for genocide and crimes against humanity,” Fitsum Arega, the Prime Minster’s former Chief of Staff said. […] CONTINUE READING
