Deputy mayor Takele Uma came into office on July 17, 2018, and took the role of mayor. His appointment raised quite a controversy that won’t die down anytime soon. Even if one were to ignore his advocations of radical ethnonationalism and Oromo’s claims over Addis Ababa, his appointment contradicts the procedures clearly stated in the constitution. After his remark that stated Oromia will have a special interest in Addis Ababa, his intentions as a deputy mayor of Addis Ababa have become questionable. The remark also didn’t go unnoticed by political experts and journalists and left a bitter impression.
One of the journalists that took his stand to the social media was Eskinder Nega. Eskinder Nega is one of Ethiopia’s prominent journalists. He is a human rights activist, blogger, and journalist. He recently released a statement on social media criticizing the deputy mayor which became the talk of the town. Mereja TV interviewed Eskinder Nega for his thoughts on the deputy mayor, how this reflects in Ethiopia’s democratic system, and the prerequisite standards for a mayor.
