The Volkswagen Group at IAA Mobility 2025: Driving the Future of Automotive Innovation

By Hiwot Nigatu

The IAA Mobility 2025 in Munich reaffirmed its status as one of the world’s premier automotive and mobility exhibitions, and the Volkswagen Group emerged as one of its central protagonists. Showcasing a sweeping portfolio of innovations, the Group used the global मंच to demonstrate its transformation from a traditional automaker into a “global automotive technology driver.”

A Strategic Vision for the Future

At the heart of Volkswagen Group’s presence was its long-term strategy—“Mobility for Generations”—which aims to position the company at the forefront of a rapidly evolving industry defined by electrification, digitalization, and sustainability. The Group emphasized its ambition to deliver climate-neutral, connected, and intelligent mobility solutions while leveraging its global footprint and diverse brand ecosystem.

CEO Oliver Blume underscored this vision, highlighting the company’s commitment to making advanced automotive technologies “accessible to everyone—early, easy to use, affordable, and sustainable.”

Electrification Takes Center Stage

A defining theme of Volkswagen’s exhibition was its aggressive push into electric mobility. The Group unveiled a new generation of affordable electric vehicles, anchored by the “Electric Urban Car Family.” This lineup includes models such as the ID. Polo, ID. Polo GTI, ID. EVERY1, and the ID. CROSS concept—vehicles expected to enter the market starting in 2026.

These models are designed to democratize electric mobility, with entry-level pricing targeted around €25,000, signaling Volkswagen’s intent to compete directly in the mass-market EV segment.

Beyond passenger cars, the Group also highlighted innovations across its broader brand portfolio, including new offerings from Audi, Porsche, and Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles, reinforcing its multi-brand strategy spanning all market segments.

Technology, AI, and Software Integration

Volkswagen Group’s transformation is not limited to electrification. At IAA Mobility 2025, the company placed strong emphasis on software-defined vehicles, artificial intelligence, and autonomous driving technologies.

Panel discussions and presentations explored topics such as the “Global Car OS,” cloud-based vehicle design, and advanced driver-assistance systems (ADAS). These initiatives reflect a shift toward treating software as a core differentiator in automotive development.

The company also announced significant investments in AI, aiming to integrate intelligent systems across vehicle development, production, and user experience. This approach is expected to accelerate innovation cycles and improve efficiency across the value chain.

Advancing Autonomous and Connected Mobility

Autonomous mobility was another focal point. Through its subsidiary MOIA, Volkswagen presented advancements in self-driving technology and urban mobility solutions. Discussions at the event highlighted the potential of autonomous driving to reshape transportation ecosystems and urban infrastructure.

Additionally, the Group showcased its vision for connected mobility, where vehicles are seamlessly integrated into digital ecosystems, enabling enhanced user experiences and new business models.

Battery Innovation and Energy Ecosystems

Volkswagen also demonstrated progress in next-generation battery technology and energy integration. Through its subsidiaries PowerCo and Elli, the company introduced developments in battery production, charging infrastructure, and bidirectional charging systems.

These innovations are critical to achieving large-scale EV adoption and reflect Volkswagen’s broader strategy to control key elements of the electric mobility value chain—from energy generation to vehicle operation.

A Holistic Approach to Mobility

What distinguished Volkswagen Group’s presence at IAA Mobility 2025 was its holistic approach. Rather than focusing solely on vehicles, the company presented an integrated mobility ecosystem that includes:

  • Electric and hybrid powertrains
  • Autonomous driving technologies
  • AI-driven development and production
  • Energy and charging solutions
  • Digital platforms and software ecosystems

This comprehensive strategy positions Volkswagen not just as a car manufacturer, but as a mobility solutions provider.
