The annual Timket festival, an Orthodox Christian celebration of Epiphany, remembers the baptism of Jesus in the Jordan River. During the festival, Tabots, models of the Ark of the Covenant, are taken from churches around each city and paraded through the streets to fields before the celebrations begin by blessing water baths. One of the fields where Tabots rest for Epiphany celebration is Jan Meda. Christian youths spend the days before Timket decorating the streets, cleaning the streets, and Jan Meda field. This year, however, members of “Fikir Yashenefal” lend a hand to assist with Timket preparations in the spirit of love, peace, and unity. “Fikir Yashenefal” is a youth that consists of Muslim and Christian youth celebrating youth unity for a peaceful Ethiopia.
