The biggest bank robbery in the history of Ethiopia occurred over the weekend. About 17 banks were robbed in Ethiopia’s Oromia region on Saturday, according to Ethiopian Observer. DW Amharic has reported that ten of the robberies occurred in western Wellega zone, according to the zone’s administrator.

Armed robbers reportedly raided banks located around Qellem Wellega in the western part of the Oromia. Some major banks which were robbed include the Ethiopian Commercial Bank, Cooperative Bank, United Bank, and Awash Bank.
The robbers damaged ATMs and other properties during the heist. The group of armed men also took four people hostage. Members of the Oromia Liberation Front (OLF) are suspected of being behind the robbery.[….] CONTINUE READING
