Ethiopia’s Lelisa Desisa has won the 48th New York Marathon today, two seconds ahead of his compatriot, Shura Kitata who came in second.
Defending champion Geoffrey Kamworor was the favorite, but the Kenyan had to let both Lelisa Desisa and Shura Kitata go into the final phase. Kitata won Rome and Frankfurt marathons last year, and just missed beating Lelisa this year in New York.
Lelisa, the two-time winner of the Boston Marathon, came in at 2:05:59, the second fastest time in New York and two seconds faster than Shura Kitata.
In the women’s field, Kenyan world record holder Mary Keitany was the winner.
