U.S. Congressman asks Trump Administration to sanction Ethiopia’s former security chief Getachew Assefa

On Monday this week, United States Congressman Mike Coffman (Republican from Colorado) has asked the Trump Administration to impose sanctions against Ethiopia’s former security chief Getachew Assefa under the Magnitsky Act for gross human rights violations against the people of Ethiopia.

This week it was reported that Getachew has been appointed as the new head of security for the Tigray region despite his atrocious human rights record.

The following is a press release from the Congressman’s office:

Aurora, Colorado — Today, U.S. Representative Mike Coffman (R-CO) sent a letter to the U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo and to the U.S. Secretary of the Treasury, Steven Mnuchin, to request that Getachew Assefa, former head of the Ethiopian National Intelligence and Security Service (NISS) be sanctioned under the Global Magnitsky Act for having committed human rights violations against the Ethiopian people.

“I have asked the Administration to apply the Global Magnitsky Act to Getachew Assefa. The United States must stand with the Ethiopian community as they continue to fight for democracy and a respect of human rights”.
