A Hyundai assembly plant opened in Ethiopia, adding the South Korean brand to a small but growing local car-building scene. New Business Ethiopia reported the launch and quoted plant owner Haile on production goals. The site was to assemble Hyundai models and later electric cars, with a target of making at least 30 percent of parts in Ethiopia.
Haile said that within five years the plant aimed to use fully domestic inputs. Hyundai worldwide was then building more than 14 million vehicles a year. Ethiopia already hosted Chinese Lifan and French Peugeot assembly, with Volkswagen also in the pipeline.
The opening fit a wider push to deepen manufacturing and cut import bills. For investors and workers, the test was whether local content and steady demand would follow the ribbon-cutting.
