Seventy authors contributed to roughly 1,000 pages that Arkebe said would serve as a reference for the coming decade. He told about 700 people at the Ethiopian Economics Association that the volume presents contrasting scholarly views backed by evidence and took about four years to finish after a 2015 start. Arkebe authored some chapters and edited sections; he said he attended the conference as a researcher, not as a government official.
The handbook sits in Oxford’s country-economy series and is aimed at students, policymakers and researchers who need a single English-language survey of growth, structural change, agriculture, industry and institutions in Ethiopia. The launch coincided with the annual economists’ meeting that regularly draws domestic and diaspora scholars to the capital.
