British suffragette Sylvia Pankhurst is buried at Holy Trinity Cathedral in Addis Ababa among Ethiopian patriots of the Italian war. Emperor Haile Selassie named her an honorary Ethiopian at her 1960 state funeral. Quartz Africa retold how her campaign against Mussolini’s 1935 invasion bound her life to Ethiopia.
When Fleet Street moved on, she founded the New Times and Ethiopia News to keep the occupation in view. She greeted Haile Selassie in exile at Waterloo Station in 1936. After the war she visited often, then settled in Addis Ababa in 1956 with her son Richard. She raised funds for the Princess Tsehai Memorial Hospital, published Ethiopia Observer, and received the Queen of Sheba medal.
Pankhurst died in Addis Ababa in 1960 at age 78. She remains the rare foreigner buried in the patriot section facing the cathedral. Richard Pankhurst later helped build Ethiopian studies at Addis Ababa University and was buried beside her after his death in 2017.
