UNDP and donors pledged about $40 million to support Ethiopia’s next election


On 19 June 2019 New Business Ethiopia reported that the United Nations Development Programme and donor countries had lined up about $40 million to support the National Electoral Board of Ethiopia ahead of the general election planned for the following May.

Board chair Birtukan Mideksa and Finance Minister Ahmed Shide said the funds would strengthen capacity, transparency, and work against electoral violence, while critics warned that displacement and insecurity still threatened a free vote.
