Amnesty said Ethiopia’s Human Rights Commission needed deep reform to serve victims


On 17 June 2019 Amnesty International said the Ethiopian Human Rights Commission must be reformed so it can help the country break with a repressive past and give victims real access to justice, after reviewing mainly 2016–2017 investigation reports.

East Africa director Joan Nyanyuki said Amnesty found the commission operated outside standard human-rights methods, often blamed protesters or opposition actors instead of thoroughly examining security-force abuse, and was “not fit for purpose” without change aligned with international standards.
