On 14 June 2019 Bloomberg reported that Ethiopia’s parliament approved a draft law allowing foreign companies to invest in the telecommunications industry of Africa’s second-most populous nation.

The vote moved Ethio Telecom’s monopoly closer to legal opening after officials had already floated year-end licence awards and a new independent regulator, and it marked a formal legislative step in Abiy Ahmed’s market reforms.
