World Politics Review said Eritrea’s politics barely shifted after the Ethiopia peace breakthrough


On 14 June 2019 World Politics Review published Tanja Müller’s Asmara report arguing that, despite the historic 2018 rapprochement with Ethiopia under Abiy Ahmed and Isaias Afwerki, everyday politics inside Eritrea had barely changed for residents who still faced tight security and scarce open debate.

Müller wrote that diaspora visitors filled cafes around Independence Day while locals stayed cautious amid reports of arbitrary arrests, anti-government graffiti, and temporary social-media blocks, saying opaque party politics made those claims hard to verify.
