Finance officials said Ethiopia may need $2.2 billion to modernise its overburdened telecom network


On 13 June 2019 Business Day reported that State Minister of Finance Eyob Tekalign said Ethiopia could need as much as $2.2 billion to modernise a creaking, overburdened telecom sector after years of public investment that he said had run out of steam.

Eyob told the paper that telecoms affected every other sector and had to be opened to competition and foreign capital, while parliament prepared a new regulator and Reuters said the government still aimed to award mobile licences by December 2019.
