UNCTAD said African foreign investment rose while Ethiopia stayed East Africa’s top destination

In June 2019 Africanews summarized UNCTAD’s World Investment Report 2019, which found that foreign direct investment into Africa rose about 11 percent to $46 billion in 2018 even as investment into many rich economies fell, and that flows into sub-Saharan Africa climbed about 13 percent to $32 billion.

UNCTAD said South Africa more than doubled inflows to about $5.3 billion, while Ethiopia remained East Africa’s largest recipient even after an 18 percent decline to about $3.3 billion, and Ghana stayed a major West African destination near $3 billion despite a smaller dip.

Kept as investment archive, the UNCTAD figures date how Ethiopia still led East African foreign investment in the 2018 data released in mid-2019.
