In June 2019 AllAfrica carried reporting that Ethiopian authorities were setting up or empowering a commission to unravel problems in the mining industry, where licensing, illegal digging, and weak oversight had long mixed together.
Mining was supposed to bring foreign exchange and local jobs, but unclear rules and insecurity around exploration sites often blocked that promise, so a cleanup commission was a governance story as much as a geology story.
Kept as mining and governance archive, the AllAfrica item dates the mid-2019 push to straighten Ethiopia’s mining administration.
