Researchers tested phone-based tracking of separated children in drought-hit northern Ethiopia

On 10 June 2019 BMC International Health and Human Rights, carried on ReliefWeb, published a study on community-based surveillance of unaccompanied and separated children in a drought-affected district of northern Ethiopia, led by Matthew MacFarlane and colleagues.

The team said no field-tested method had tracked how separation changes during a long crisis, so they set up a mobile-phone surveillance system with local monitors to record ongoing separations and reunifications that ordinary surveys can miss.

Kept as humanitarian and child-protection archive, the paper dates an early attempt to measure child separation in real time during Ethiopia’s northern drought response.
