Almaz Derese sat English, Amharic, and maths exams in hospital half an hour after giving birth

On 11 June 2019 the BBC reported that Almaz Derese, a 21-year-old from Metu in western Ethiopia, took secondary-school exams in a hospital bed at Karl Mettu Hospital about thirty minutes after giving birth, after the national exam schedule had been delayed because of Ramadan.

She told BBC Afaan Oromoo that she did not want to wait another year to graduate, and her husband said he persuaded the school to let her sit English, Amharic, and maths papers in hospital before she finished the remaining tests at the exam center, with armed police still guarding exam papers as usual.

Kept as society and education archive, the BBC report dates a widely shared Ethiopian exam-season story from June 2019.
