In June 2019 Music Ally reported that Ethio Telecom had teamed up with Awtar Multimedia to launch Awtar Music, a streaming app built around Ethiopian songs in several of the country’s languages, with options to buy tracks and albums.
Music in Africa said the creators had designed a split so singers, lyricists, arrangers, melodists, and producers each received a share of song profits, which put a state telco at the center of Ethiopia’s early streaming market the way other African operators were doing elsewhere.
Kept as tech and culture archive, the Music Ally note dates Ethio Telecom’s entry into local music streaming in June 2019.
