In June 2019 Amnesty International reported that Addis Ababa police had prevented journalist and former Prisoner of Conscience Eskinder Nega from holding a press conference at the Hilton Hotel to announce plans for his new television station Senai, after a similar block days earlier at the Ethiopia Hotel.
Amnesty’s East Africa director Joan Nyanyuki said the harassment aimed to frustrate Eskinder and curb free expression, and that Ethiopian law did not require press conferences to be licensed or approved by police.
Kept as press-freedom archive, the Amnesty statement dates police interference with Eskinder Nega’s public media launch plans in June 2019.
