Ethiopia Insight asked whether Oromia’s OLF peace step was real progress or another false start

In June 2019 Ethiopia Insight’s Ermias Tasfaye wrote that Oromo Liberation Front leader Daud Ibsa had said in Addis Ababa that the movement no longer had fighters and was ready for peaceful politics, linking hands with Oromia’s regional president, security officials, and mediators including Jawar Mohammed and Bekele Gerba.

The essay noted that OLF rebels had returned from Eritrea in 2018 expecting to join elections, but that the re-entry had been botched and armed clashes with the ruling Oromo Democratic Party had continued, so many people still doubted how much control Daud Ibsa really held.

Kept as politics analysis archive, the Insight piece dates the tense mid-2019 debate over whether Oromia was finally moving from rebellion to open politics.
