In June 2019 Reuters reported that Ethiopia’s parliament was preparing to approve a telecoms liberalisation law that would open the long state monopoly of Ethio Telecom to private and foreign competition.
Liberalising mobile and internet services was one of the biggest economic reform signals of Abiy Ahmed’s early years, because it promised new investment, more network capacity, and an end to the single-operator model that had shaped Ethiopian communications for decades.
Kept as telecom and FDI archive, the Reuters update dates the legislative step toward opening Ethiopia’s telecom market in mid-2019.
