In June 2019 Ynetnews marked about forty years since Ferede Aklum helped lead the first groups of Ethiopian Jews on foot through the desert toward Sudan, work that later fed into Operation Moses and Operation Solomon.
Aklum, who died in 2009, was a school headmaster and community leader whose brother Amram said Israeli memory often credited security services while overlooking activists who walked the desert and buried the dead along the way, and who wanted Ferede’s name better known outside the Ethiopian-Israeli community.
Kept as history and diaspora archive, the Ynet feature dates a 2019 effort to restore Ferede Aklum’s place in the Ethiopian Jewish exodus story.
