In June 2019 Africanews reported that Ethiopia’s Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed traveled to Sudan to try to mediate between the military council and opposition forces after security forces crushed protests in Khartoum and killed many civilians.
Sudan’s opposition later set conditions around any Ethiopian-led talks, and several reporting strands followed arrests of opposition figures after meetings tied to the mediation effort, which made Abiy’s shuttle a major Horn diplomacy story that week.
Kept as geopolitics archive, the Africanews report dates Ethiopia’s public attempt to broker a Sudan transition path in early June 2019.
