In June 2019 Ethiopia Observer reported that Getachew Chane, a senior Ethiopian Broadcasting Corporation journalist who traveled to Vancouver with President Sahle-Work Zewde for the Women Deliver conference, had stopped appearing at events he was expected to cover after sending one arrival dispatch.
Colleagues said he was planning to seek asylum in Canada. Getachew had headed EBC’s documentary section and was known for narrating the controversial 2013 film Jihadawi Harekat, and he was the brother of Kebede Chane, then director general of the Refugee and Returnee Affairs Agency.
Kept as press and rights archive, the Observer report dates how a state-media journalist’s disappearance abroad became a public story during Ethiopia’s early reform years.
