In May 2019 WHO reported that Ethiopia destroyed monovalent type 2 oral polio vaccine vials used in two vaccination rounds across five zones of Somali Region during a synchronized Horn of Africa response to circulating vaccine-derived type 2 poliovirus.
After the global switch away from type 2 in routine oral vaccine, leftover mOPV2 must be tightly controlled and destroyed once outbreak campaigns end, under WHO and UNICEF stockpile rules.
The Horn campaign had followed detections in Somalia and Kenya, and technical advisers warned the region remained at continuing risk.
Kept as health archive, the vial-destruction notice is a dated polio-response compliance marker for Ethiopia and the Horn.
