Ethiopia Observer warned that Rift Valley lakes such as Ziway and Abiyata were vanishing fast

In June 2019 Ethiopia Observer reported that lakes in the Ethiopian Rift Valley, including Ziway and Abiyata, were shrinking in ways that threatened fishing, lakeside trade, and bird habitat.

Bayush Sisay, who ran a small restaurant near the water, said she was no longer sure how long the lakeside economy could support her, which put a human face on a long environmental decline.

Kept as environment archive, the Observer feature dates local alarm over fast-vanishing Rift Valley lakes in mid-2019.
