In June 2019 Quartz Africa wrote that Ethiopia and Kenya were both wrestling with debt from Chinese-financed standard-gauge railways, even after Beijing offered Ethiopia fresh concessions around the Belt and Road Forum.
Ethiopia had already renegotiated railway loan terms in 2018 and later received cancellation of some interest-free loans through the end of 2018, which showed both the pain of mega-project borrowing and the room China sometimes left to restructure.
Kept as debt and FDI archive, the Quartz analysis dates how East Africa’s flagship Chinese rail projects looked financially strained by mid-2019.
