In May 2019 the International Committee of the Red Cross described aid that reached more than 28,000 people, both Oromo and Somali, who had been displaced by the 2017 ethnic conflict along the Oromia–Somali border in eastern Ethiopia.

Abdulkadir Mohammed, a 48-year-old father of eight, told the Red Cross that his family fled with nothing after their property was destroyed, and that later help gave them hope again after a period that felt hopeless.
