FEWS NET warned food insecurity was intensifying after a poor Gu/Belg season

FEWS NET’s May 2019 Ethiopia Key Message Update said food insecurity was intensifying despite late May rains, because Gu/Genna/Belg rains had started late, stayed erratic, and stayed below average in southern and southeastern pastoral areas.

FEWS NET warned food insecurity was intensifying after a poor Gu/Belg season

The outlook projected Crisis (IPC Phase 3) outcomes in East and West Hararghe and expected several other zones in Oromia, northern Somali, and northeastern Amhara to tip into Crisis in June as purchasing power fell and livestock stayed weak.

It also flagged likely Belg crop failure or below-average harvests, high maize and wheat-flour prices, worsening child nutrition, and uneven IDP returns including reluctant Gedio households.

Kept as food-security archive, the May update dates how drought and displacement stacked into mid-2019 hunger risk.
