On May 29, 2019, Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed presented a citizenship award to Dr. Catherine Hamlin during the 60th anniversary of the Addis Ababa Fistula Hospital, and Tadias covered the ceremony.
Hamlin and her late husband Reginald, gynecologists from Australia and New Zealand, had come to Ethiopia in 1959 and later founded the specialist hospital that treated more than 60,000 women with obstetric fistula.
Officials unveiled a statue of Catherine and Reginald and planted seedlings with First Lady Zinash Tayachew, framing the hospital as both a medical and a dignity project for marginalized women.
Kept as health and history archive, the Tadias report dates the state’s public honor for Hamlin’s long fistula work.
