In May 2019 Bloomberg and follow-on wires reported Benishangul-Gumuz deputy president Adigo Amsaya calling for international investigators after more than 200 people were killed in tit-for-tat violence near the Sudanese border, including attacks in Amhara’s Agew Awi Zone.
Adigo said armed Amhara youths had not yet been arrested for a massacre his region attributed to them, while about 45 people had been held over earlier Metekel killings that began with a cash dispute among laborers on 26 April.
Peace Ministry teams arrived to investigate. International Crisis Group’s William Davison called it another ethno-nationalist escalation and urged the federal government to tell the public what happened.
As accountability archive, the probe demand matters because Abiy Ahmed’s government preferred quiet command posts to transparent body counts. Border-zone massacres do not vanish when officials change the subject.
