Water and electricity minister Seleshi Bekele said Gibe III’s water had fallen more than 16 meters year-on-year, creating a deficit of about 476MW against roughly 1,400MW of then-available generation, while Tekeze and Ashegoda also underperformed.

Ethiopia cut power exports to Djibouti by half and suspended exports to Sudan, after earning about $80 million from those sales the previous year.

Kept as energy and economy archive, the Africa Report file dates the May–July 2019 blackout crisis under Abiy Ahmed.
