The World Bank approved $200 million in guarantees for 1,000MW of Ethiopian renewables

In May 2019 ESI Africa reported that the World Bank’s board approved a $200 million Renewable Energy Guarantees Programme, or REGREP, to back private solar and wind projects in Ethiopia.

The World Bank approved $200 million in guarantees for 1,000MW of Ethiopian renewables

The program aimed to support more than 1,000 megawatts of greenfield independent power producer projects, including Scaling Solar auctions, and it was the first IDA guarantee package of its kind for Ethiopia after the 2018 PPP law.

Bank officials said the guarantees could help pull in more than $1.5 billion in private investment while diversifying a grid that still depended heavily on hydropower.

Kept as energy and FDI archive, the REGREP approval is a dated checkpoint for Ethiopia’s shift toward competitively tendered private renewables.
