A Daily Sun essay said Ethiopia–Eritrea peace could reshape the Horn

In May 2019 Nigeria’s Daily Sun published an essay by Inwalomhe Donald arguing that full normalization between Ethiopia and Eritrea could open borders, ports, embassies, and flights that had been shut since the 1998–2000 war.

The piece framed joint economic projects and freer movement as a pathway for Horn peace, and it also sketched how a less isolated Eritrea might engage conflicts in South Sudan and Somalia.

Those hopes sat beside later border closures and incomplete implementation, so the essay captures the early optimism after Abiy Ahmed and Isaias Afwerki’s 2018 rapprochement.

Kept as Horn geopolitics archive, the Daily Sun commentary dates how African opinion writers sold the peace spring in mid-2019.
