In May 2019 the BBC reported that Ethiopia’s foreign ministry apologized after a map of Africa on its website showed neighboring Somalia absorbed into Ethiopian territory while still marking Somaliland.
The ministry said it regretted confusion over how the map had “crept in,” at a time when Abiy Ahmed was otherwise trying to calm Horn rivalries after years of border tension with Mogadishu.
Cartographic insults travel fast on social media, and the apology showed how quickly a website graphic can become a diplomatic incident between neighbors.
Kept as Horn diplomacy archive, the erased-Somalia map episode is a dated soft-power blunder from May 2019.
