In May 2019 Africanews reported that National Electoral Board chair Birtukan Mideksa said a delayed national census would not stop preparations for elections then planned for 2020, and that NEBE had submitted a budget near $129 million to lawmakers.
The postponed April 2019 census had been expected to guide boundaries and logistics, so the board’s public confidence mattered to parties already arguing about timing and fairness.
Budget asks and census delays became early signs that the 2020 calendar would slip, as it later did under conflict and pandemic pressure.
Kept as elections archive, the $129 million NEBE request is a dated financing and census checkpoint.
