In May 2019 New Business Ethiopia carried a hospitality industry brief comparing individually branded hotels with franchise chain hotels as African city markets grew.
The article said guests cared most about basics like hot water, quiet sleep, and reliable Wi-Fi, and that many stand-alone hotels spent more on gyms and spas while neglecting room standards. Franchise chains, it argued, used shared research for bedding, bathrooms, trained front-desk staff, and clearer complaint handling at check-out.
The piece read partly as industry advocacy for groups such as Sunmei and related brands, but it still marks how Ethiopia’s hotel boom was being sold as a choice between local independent properties and imported chain systems.
Kept as business and tourism archive, the franchise-versus-independent debate remains a useful checkpoint for Addis Ababa and regional hotel investment talk in the late 2010s.
