Cross-border flight from Amhara into Sudan has a long history whenever local security collapses. Official return counts often arrive without independent verification of whether people came home voluntarily or under pressure.

Even so, a named figure of 1,500 returnees is a dated migration marker for the Amhara–Sudan corridor in 2019, before later wars drove far larger refugee waves the other way.

As migration archive, the army’s claim belongs with other Horn border files that track how violence in Gondar pushed civilians across the frontier.
