Ethiopian Electric Power restarted two turbines at the Tekezé hydro plant

In May 2019 Afrik21 reported that state utility Ethiopian Electric Power had reactivated two turbines at the Tekezé hydropower plant in northern Ethiopia so they could feed the grid again.

Tekezé is one of the large dams Ethiopia relies on when rainfall and reservoir levels cooperate. Bringing turbines back online during a season of national rationing was both a technical fix and a political signal that engineers were chasing every available megawatt.

Hydropower recovery does not erase drought risk. It does show how maintenance and water management decide whether northern plants help or abandon industry and homes.

Kept as energy archive, the Tekezé restart pairs with 2019 rationing stories and with later Horn debates about exporting power while domestic supply stays unstable.
