On 17 May 2019 Xinhua reported that the Benishangul-Gumuz regional communications office said ethnic clashes in Dangur in late April had left 31 people dead after a dispute between two individuals spread into wider fighting.
The statement said the violence pitted Gumuz and Amhara communities against each other, that federal and regional forces had been deployed, and that 63 people were arrested on suspicion of involvement.
Western Ethiopia’s ethnic federal map has repeatedly turned local quarrels into communal killings. Official tallies are often incomplete, but they still fix a date and a death count that later reporting can test.
As conflict archive, the Dangur figure belongs with other Benishangul-Gumuz violence files from the reform years under Abiy Ahmed’s government.
