UK Queen refused Ethiopia’s plea to return Prince Alemayehu’s remains from Windsor

In May 2019 British coverage said Queen Elizabeth II had refused Ethiopia’s request to repatriate the bones of Prince Alemayehu, the Ethiopian prince buried at Windsor Castle after he was taken to Britain as a child following the 1868 Magdala expedition.

Ethiopian officials and advocates called the burial a colonial wound that should be closed by bringing the remains home. The palace decision kept the grave in Britain and sparked a diplomatic row that diaspora communities followed closely.

Heritage fights over Magdala loot and royal bodies are not museum trivia. They are arguments about who owns Ethiopian history after imperial violence.

Kept as heritage and diplomacy archive, the Alemayehu file remains a clear marker of unfinished Magdala restitution long after tourist brochures moved on.
