In early May 2019 SupChina reported that Abiy Ahmed, during meetings with Xi Jinping, raised the pre-trial detention in China of a 27-year-old Ethiopian civil engineering graduate, turning a bilateral soft-power trip into a consular-rights test.
Individual detention cases are easy for capitals to bury under infrastructure MOUs. Naming one graduate in a room with Xi signaled that diaspora and student safety had become a political file, not only a family nightmare.
Ethiopia’s China relationship runs on loans, rail, industrial parks, and silence. When Addis speaks up for one citizen, it is worth recording whether follow-through matches the handshake.
