In April 2019, Abiy Ahmed visited the China Academy of Space Technology to inspect ETRSS-1, Ethiopia’s first earth-observation satellite, a roughly 70 kg multispectral craft developed with the Ethiopian Space Science and Technology Institute and Chinese support.
Remote sensing was sold as tools for agriculture, climate, and mapping. It was also soft-power theater on the same China trip that featured debt and e-commerce symbolism.
Under Abiy Ahmed’s modernization brand, a satellite became proof Ethiopia could leap tiers. Ground stations, data access, and civilian oversight decide whether space tech serves the public or only the brochure.
Kept as tech/space archive, ETRSS-1 marks Ethiopia’s entry ticket into orbital observation. Launch hype is easy. Open data is the test.
